Employment

While our staff is comprised mostly of year-round residents of the McCarthy-Kennicott area, we do have a few positions open each year for those who wish to be part of a unique remote Alaskan bush community - at least for a summer! But be warned, every year at least one first timer becomes a full time resident! After all, we are located at the very center of America's largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias.

Applications for the 2008 season are accepted from January through March, 2008. Our season is May 15th through September 15th. Eligible candidates will need to make the commitment to stay for the full season.

Hotel Receptionist

The Ma Johnson’s Hotel, part of the McCarthy Lodge, is a fully restored original boarding house built in 1923. Each of the 20 rooms is filled with original artifacts from the town. Open from May through September, this position is for our 2007 summer season - Morning Shift 7AM; 6 days per week. This position requires a personable and pleasant individual who is able to multitask. Strong organizational skills are essential. A keen interest in historical properties is a plus as the Ma Johnson’s is considered a “living museum”. Working with tour companies, individuals, international guests, and neighbors, our hotel receptionists are a critical position to our organization.

This 20 room hotel has a dynamic living presence and is a highlight of every visitor’s Alaskan adventure. Guests recognize the hotel as offering a genuine turn-of-the-century Alaskan experience. Tours of the hotel are often requested by visitors to McCarthy. McCarthy is a very remote truly Alaskan town (about 200 residents in the summer), supplies are flown in once a week, internet access is available by satellite, and there are not many services available. Surrounded by more mountains and glaciers than anywhere outside of Greenland and Antarctica, we are located in the largest protected, pristine wilderness in North America. This position includes taking guest reservations, shuttle driving, invoicing, data entry. Clean driving record required.

Housekeeping

Housekeeping positions at the Ma Johnson's Hotel (part of the McCarthy Lodge) are available for the 2007 summer season. We are looking for several self-motivated individuals who will enjoy working in a pleasant historic hotel. Modern laundry facilities, excellent amenities, historic artifacts throughout the property, and a real sense of charm make for a wonderful work environment - the hotel's uniqueness and warmth create a guest experience unlike any other hotel in Alaska. Hotel tips and other benefits for the right candidates. Housekeeping experience is a plus, but not required. Three work related references will need to be provided.

Kitchen Assistants & Dishwashers:

Our Kitchen Assistants perform general food preparation, dishwashing, and cleanup. Time is split between these tasks, and a strong self-motivated work ethic is required. A completely new dishwashing station will be implemented this season, providing improved workflow. This allows our dishwasher positions to evolve and expand into other tasks such as food preparation. Many of our kitchen assistants return to fill other positions. The right candidates can use this position to learn basic skills for future advancement. You will need to provide three work related references.

Wait Staff:

Our wait staff positions offer an exciting, productive, and pleasant work environment. Our restaurant is well loved by locals and guests, and every guest becomes our best promoter, in part because of the high quality food standards, originality and signature dishes presented by well trained, highly experienced professionals. Our atmosphere is completely unique, historic, and warm. Candidates should have at least 3 years experience in a professional fine dining or bistro full service restaurant. A genuine understanding and love of wine is a serious plus. Experience with POS Systems (Maitre D, Aloha, Micros, Squirrel or similar a plus). Training for our Wine program begins in mid-May. An excellent high paying position for truly exceptional wait staff candidates.
