MA JOHNSON’S HISTORIC HOTEL
Guests at the McCarthy Lodge are housed in the restored, historic Ma Johnson building.
Night time is when everyone wants to be in McCarthy. A wonderful social community with local nightlife, restaurants, a couple shops, and a heart felt community atmosphere. Come meet the good natured and fun loving handful of people who call McCarthy Home!
The Ma Johnson’s Hotel is our flagship hotel. For those on a budget, our Lancaster’s Hotel offers less expensive accommodations in a hostel style building with simple, private rooms. There are cabins, campgrounds and other accommodations in the park, but all are located at least 1 or more miles from McCarthy. If you are camping, staying in cabins, or up in Kennecott, since all the nightlife is in McCarthy, rest assured there is transportation back to your accommodations even if we are sold out or you prefer to camp.
Our small hotel has 20 rooms, and does sell out (but always worth checking availability even at the last minute.) Although rooms are shared bath, the hotel is designed with bathrooms throughout the hotel. There is one bathroom for every two bedrooms so you are always 1 door from a bathroom. Amenities include custom bathrobes, slippers, and handmade soaps & shampoo as well as locally made lotions.

We are here to share McCarthy during the Guest’s Vacation. We intend on exceeding guest expectations in our approach to hospitality. We embody respect of the area’s history, with a relevant sense of community. We have always used a local approach to architecture & artifacts, ingredients for the restaurants, and local hire preference. Every staff member is trained and empowered to solve any guest concern on the spot.
Our preservation and sustainability programs go beyond building and growth controls to include all aspects of hospitality performed in a world heritage site in remote Alaska. From procurement logistics and recycling, to locally farmed food and low-impact restaurant operations; we take our role seriously because we choose to live as stewards of McCarthy, Alaska.
We support local farming. We recycle and re-evaluate effectiveness every year. We bury glass after crushing. We haul metals and non-burnable solids out of the national park to appropriate waste management facilities. We only burn in our high-temp incinerator during appropriate times of low impact.
